Using High Impact Conceptual Visuals to
Stand Out from the Clutter

You know what it’s like when you see a print or digital advertisement, receive a direct mailing, or watch a commercial, and the visuals grab your attention. That’s the opening advertisers hope for. These days we are bombarded with imagery and stimuli vying for our attention from all manner of mediums -- smart phones, computers, TVs, magazines, mail, billboards, vehicles. ASM Microbe 2020

Designed and produced for the American Society for Microbiology's annual meeting held in Chicago, Illinois, this campaign helped to make the scientific conference ASM's most successful event to date. For the creative campaign, we designed a series of "wireframe icons" representing different features of the scientific meeting (Microscope, Microphone, Microbes, DNA Helix Emerging from a Tablet, and Handshake). Each icons directly corresponded to a specific meeting keyword (Science, Speakers, Tracks, Presentations and Connections).  We then created a series of futuristic backgrounds that blended colorful high-tech wireframes with actual images from previous meetings. The campaign presented ASM Microbe as the premier meeting at the visionary forefront of microbial science.

Creative materials included postcards, print ads, mailers, animated digital ads, web banners, email banners, leaderboard headers and videos.  The creative carried over to the event with welcome banners, directional signage, and other tie-ins.

The hugely successful ASM Microbe 2020 meeting brought more 14,000 microbial science attendees to the city of Chicago.

Pollzilla Social Polling App

Pollzilla is a slick little social polling app that lets users create great looking text, image, music or video polls to send to friends, family members, classmates, co-workers, clients or any other groups, as well as share on social media. With Pollzilla's easy-to-use tools and templates, anyone can create a professional looking poll in minutes; invite their contacts to vote; and watch the results in real time. People can also download the app simply to vote in polls that interested them. Pollzilla has thousands of polls in more than 100 different categories, including Movies, TV Shows, Music, Celebrities, Pop Culture, Sports, Politics, Comics, Current Events, and more. Individuals can receive Pollzilla polls based on their interests; see how their votes compare; and even repoll a Pollzilla poll to their contacts. BlueFusion worked with the Pollzilla team to design and develop the app, including branding, wireframes, screen designs and layouts, UI, features and functionality. Pollzilla is slated to launch in the AppStore in Summer 2021, and on Android in 2022.

ASM Microbe 2019

Created for the American Society for Microbiology's annual meeting held in San Francisco, California, this campaign helped to drive record breaking attendance. The creative concept featured six "personas" that reflected the microbial science attendee demographics—microbiologists, lab techs, students, researchers, academicians, and scientists. Each persona was paired with a keyword, each beginning with the letter "E", which promoted an aspect of the meeting experience, as well as a microbial science background. The design system was color coded both to showcase the broad spectrum and appeal of the event and to stand apart from the more bland and mundane materials often seen in scientific conference materials.

Creative materials included postcards, print ads, mailers, pop-up displays, animated digital ads, web banners, email banners, and leaderboard headers.  The creative carried over on site with outdoor street banners and branded signage throughout the San Francisco Convention Center.

Attracting more than 14,000 attendees, ASM Microbe 2019 became the Society's highest attended meeting event at that time.

ABRCMS 2018

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students is one of the world's largest meetings for underrepresented minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)—providing students and young professional attendees with unparalleled opportunities for learning, mentorships, networking and presenting. For the 2018 meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana, ABRCMS wanted to breathe new excitement into its brand and present a crisp, dynamic and polished campaign that would appeal to a diverse audience. The creative featured a series of collages that reflected attendee demographics an STEM imagery. Campaign materials included postcards, mailers, digital ads, and web site home page sliders. Exceeding goals, the campaign drove record-breaking conference attendance. BlueFusion won a Gold Communicator Award for the ABRCMS 2018 campaign.

Copyright Alliance Video

The Copyright Alliance wanted a short, dynamic video that could be played prior to presentations that would be able to quickly and succinctly explain who they are, what they do, who they represent, and the global value of copyright.  BlueFusion produced this colorful, high energy that tells this story and hits on all of the keypoints in under two minutes. Because the client didn't want to include voiceover narration, the story is told solely through words and images. Throughout the duration of the video, everything is constantly moving with one segment seamlessly transitioning to the next. We used a strong color palette and duotone imagery as a means to block off content into neat chunks. We selected an upbeat, friendly soundtrack that wouldn't fall into a specific genre. The Copyright Alliance video has been shown at numerous events and in front of a wide array of groups—ranging from corporate and entertainment industry executives to U.S. and state government regulators and lawmakers.

ASM Microbe 2020 Web Video

For its Microbe 2020 conference in Chicago, Illinois, the American Society for Microbiology asked for a video promoting the excitement and "electricity" of the meeting that could play in a loop on the home page of the meeting website. BlueFusion produced a slick 45-second multimedia animation to achieve that objective. Because the video utilized the same imagery and branding, and echoed the keypoints, it worked seamlessly with all of the other marketing materials produced for the campaign, including brochures, postcards, print ads, web ads and banners, and email banners. The video was e a great way to get members educated and excited about the ASM Microbe 2020 meeting. It also allowed them to immediately register by clicking on an embedded link.

AveryHess Realtors Client Testimonials

For virtually every company, customer or client testimonials are invaluable. It's a way to capture the client/customer experiences in honest, real world language, and a way to reassure prospective clients by having them hear from individuals they can relate to. Every year, AveryHess Realtors works with literally hundreds, if not thousands of  home buyers and home sellers. However, while the company enjoyed high ratings and excellent word of mouth recommendations and referrals, they only had a few older testimonials captured on relatively low quality video. Working with AveryHess's internal marketing team to identify a cross section of buyers and sellers, BlueFusion produced a series of client testimonials. For the video series, we employed high quality production values to ensure that AveryHess's videos would look every bit as good as those from national firms.

Early Achievements Video Interviews

Developed by Kennedy Krieger Institute's Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), Early Achievements is a groundbreaking and highly effective education program for children with autism and severe learning disabilities. Behind the program is its founder, Dr. Rebecca Landa, along with a team of dedicated teachers and coaches. Due to the successes shown in the EA program in Baltimore, Maryland, state and local school systems across the country were interested in adapting the program in their jurisdictions. BlueFusion worked with Kennedy Krieger CARD team to produce a series of 3- to 5-minute video interviews to tell the EA story from different perspectives. The series included one-on-one interviews with Dr. Landa, teachers, coaches, school administrators and parents. These videos were an excellent way from parents, teachers and other caretakers of students with learning disabilities to hear first hand about the benefits and workings of the Early Achievements programs.

mSphere Direct “Whiteboard” Video

mSphere Direct is an online scientific journal and innovative program that lets researchers and scientists publish their manuscripts much faster than by going the traditional peer-review publishing route. To both promote the program and demonstrate the ease, simplicity and speed of publishing via mSphere Direct, BlueFusion produced a "whiteboard" style video. A well produced whiteboard video can be a clean and engaging way to present and promote complex processes. However, poorly produced videos using canned programs often come out amateurish and can do a brand far more harm than good. Working with the in-house marketing team, we brought in a top caliber cartoonist to create a series of original color marker illustrations that broke down the various steps in the mSphere Direct publishing process.  Once the illustrations were approved by the journal editors, we finalized a script that reflected the whimsical look and feel of the illustrations while explaining the process in clear and concise language and terms. We hired a professional narrator, then composited together the illustrations with the hand holding a marker to create the drawing animation. And finally, we added a complementary music track to give the piece a final polish. The video was able to explain the process and benefits of publishing via mSphere Direct in less than two minutes.

Strive Fitness Personal Training

Strive Fitness is a network of certified personal trainers that provides high quality training tailored to each client's needs and goals. Many of Strive's trainers are elite level athletes who are experienced in an array of disciplines such as weight training, distance running, cycling and boxing/MMA. As a result, most Strive's clients are interested in higher-intensity workouts or competitive performance training. In the crowded personal fitness market, it's essential to have a brand that can both stand out on marketing materials and look good promotional gear and apparel.  In creating the brand, we wanted to design a look and feel that reflected Strive's high-performance, high-results approach. The logo has the Strive Fitness name in a modified boldface typefont set over twin swooshes (which represents the partnership between the trainer and the client). In addition to the brand, BlueFusion developed a series of web banners, digital ads, and business cards—each of which could be customized to a specific trainer. This system enables each trainer to market him/herself individually, while also rolling in to the overall Strive Fitness brand.

APS Webinar Series

The American Physiological Society (APS) is the leading society for the physiological sciences. Every year the Society produces a series of high level webinars presented by some of the foremost experts in the field. Each webinar focuses on a physiology subspecialty. APS wanted to come up with a system that would more closely tie all of the webinars together under a unified look and feel umbrella. This system would both make it simpler and easier to develop subsequent marketing materials as new webinars were added as well as promote the overall APS brand. BlueFusion worked with the APS marketing team to create an attractive, polished and flexible design that could be easily customized to any webinar topic area. To reflect the virtual learning experience, each piece features a main image showing webinar attendee in his/her home or office environment at a desktop, laptop or tablet. Floating behind the user on the computes are keywords tied to the webinar topic—suggesting that these are among the learning modules that will be covered. A macro segment of APS's logo icon is incorporated into the print ad design to tie everything together. For the system, BlueFusion developed digital ads, banners, and print ad templates.

ASM Microbe 2021 Campaign Concept

Whenever BlueFusion works on any project, we typically like to present a minimum of three concepts to the client. As a result, we often end up with strong creative ideas that for one reason or another didn't move forward. So while not every design is going to work for a given project, we occasionally like to show a few of these ideas nonetheless. This campaign concept was developed while working on ASM Microbe 2021. The client wanted to focus on the idea of "small science (i.e. microscopic) being a big deal." This was being proven to be especially true in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. For the concept, we came up with a treatment of pairing an individual microbial scientist with a single microbe which was magnified thousands of times. We then converted that composited image into a duotone to give it a clean, eye-catching look that would translate nicely in print and digital materials. Finally, we added a subtle oil paint effect. The unique microbiologist/microbe composition was a creative way of present small science in a big way Ultimately the idea was a bit too ambitious, as it would have required the development of individual compositions for each of the eight different microbial science subspecialties covered at the Microbe meeting. In the end, it was simpler and easier for the campaign to go with a single, generic image.

Representing more than 30,000 microbial scientists, including researchers, educators and health professionals, The American Society for Microbiology is one of the world's largest life scientist societies. With any member organization, it's always important to promote the value of membership—both to attract new potential members and to retain existing members. BlueFusion designed a value of membership campaign for ASM. The concept spotlights actual ASM members representing different demographics, scientific sub-specialties, and career stages. The DC, Maryland, Virginia (DMV) is one of the most active and competitive real estate markets in the world. As a comparatively small regional firm, AveryHess Realtors has to compete with much larger regional and national firms such as Long & Foster, Century 21, Keller Williams, RedFin and others. Despite this, AveryHess has constantly ranked in the top 5 realty firms in every market where it has an office. AveryHess also ranks near or at the top in productivity per agent, client satisfaction, and agent job satisfaction. Because AveryHess can't match the massive marketing budgets of the large firms, the company's marketing had to be more unique and creative. BlueFusion developed the "SuperSeller" campaign as a way to help AveryHess stand out among the crowded competition and to promote the special features that set the firm apart. Designed to work as a marketing, recruitment, and agent-level personal marketing campaign, SuperSeller featured a variation of the iconic Superman logo set in AveryHess's brand colors. Agents could be photographed in custom printed AveryHess t-shirts in the classic Superman/Supergirl reveal pose. The system included print ads, digital ads, agent-level personal marketing postcard and digital ad templates, and an AveryHess agent recruitment microsite.
